It is a marine wonderland - fish, dugong, turtles, dolphins, mangroves, seagrass pastures and birdlife. Many fish species are in abundance, along with sand and mud crabs. Excellent fishing is available either from the shore or out in the dinghy, where mangrove-lined creeks can be explored or you can try your luck in the deep holes along Fraser Island. Yabbies can be pumped on the low tide flats.
For those who want a day at the shops, Maryborough is only a half-hour drive away. Access to Poona is via the Cooloola Coast Road, from either Maryborough or Gympie. Poona, right on the beachfront, with views towards the southern part of Fraser Island, is a delightful hideaway spot for a holiday. It's an easy drive from the city, yet seems to be in another world.
