The hideaway town of Poona is located on the mainland, opposite Fraser Island, and is popular with holiday-makers who enjoy the quiet life, quiet water and good fishing. The area of water separating the mainland from Fraser Island is called the "The Great Sandy Straits", a sheltered waterway still very much the way nature designed it.
It is a marine wonderland - fish, dugong, turtles, dolphins, mangroves, seagrass pastures and birdlife. Many fish species are in abundance, along with sand and mud crabs. Excellent fishing is available either from the shore or out in the dinghy, where mangrove-lined creeks can be explored or you can try your luck in the deep holes along Fraser Island. Yabbies can be pumped on the low tide flats.
To relax and unwind, Poona offers peace and quiet which is sometimes hard to find these days. Enjoy nature by taking long walks, watching the birdlife and discovering the wildflowers. A perfect break from the hustle and bustle of city life.
For those who want a day at the shops, Maryborough is only a half-hour drive away. Access to Poona is via the Cooloola Coast Road, from either Maryborough or Gympie. Poona, right on the beachfront, with views towards the southern part of Fraser Island, is a delightful hideaway spot for a holiday. It's an easy drive from the city, yet seems to be in another world.
At Poona Palms Caravan Park, Chris and Julie Stansfield have a warm welcome for folks who want to get away from it all. Some people drop in for a night and stay a week, and in the winter, visitors come for extended stays.
Poona Palms Caravan Park has caravan and tent sites and on-site vans. There are also two and three bedroom first floor units which have premier views of the Sandy Strait and Fraser Island, only 9 km away.
Newly completed one bedroom resort-style units are also available and sleep up to five people. These tastefully decorated units feature a large bathroom, cooking facilities, spacious layout and patio. Linen hire is available. Everything you need for a nightly or extended holiday.
The Annual Poona Family Fishing Competition is being held over Easter on 30th and 31st March. This is a family orientated weekend, as well as catering for the keen fisherman. Entertainment is being provided by popular, local band SWARM on Saturday night with a licenced bar and hot food available. Games and raffles have been organised to provide additional entertainment for all ages. Prize categories are designed to give everyone a chance of winning - not just for landing the biggest fish. All proceeds are to aid the Poona Ratepayers and Progress Association. Activities and entertainment will be held at the newly completed Community Hall and sports oval and on the foreshore. Come and enjoy the fun! February 18, 2002
The Community Hall was completed in time for New Year's Eve celebrations. A great night was had by all, despite interesting innovations created by a storm-related blackout. We didn't plan the Hall's first function being held by candlelight and generator power! Since then other activities have been organised, including bingo and regular cricket matches - hopefully the Poona team will stop coming second!! February 18, 2002
The fishing and crabbing has been steady over the last few weeks. Anglers report good catches of summer and winter whiting and reef fish near Fraser Island. A few mud crabs and prawns have been caught in the local creek. It's a hard life! February 18, 2002
Easter bookings - All on-site accommodation for Easter has been booked for several months (with waiting lists!). A couple of powered sites are still available. We have a large area allotted for unpowered camping and have had many bookings, however there is still space available. Bookings for on-site accommodation and powered sites are still available after the Easter weekend. February 18, 2002
Recently a couple of local residents have instigated the formation of the Great Sandy Straits Flora and Fauna Watch. They will be working closely with the National Parks Dept, monitoring the local numbers of dugong and turtles, seagrass growth and other related activities. The aim is to protect, educate and manage the wonderful diverse marine and coastal wildlife we have in and around Poona. December 8, 2001
The Poona Sports and Social Club has recently been formed and is generating a great deal of interest. The purpose of the club is to enable people to come together through common interests, such as music, arts and crafts, painting and to organise social and recreational events for the enjoyment of all. And of course to put the Community Hall to good use! August 30, 2001
Fresh is definitely best and we're very fortunate that a local resident has recently commenced deliveries of fresh fruit and veggies to everyone in Poona. As we are a relatively isolated community it's great to see someone providing a much needed and appreciated service. This is a great addition to our on-park shop, which despite recent supplier problems, has been able to reorganise daily deliveries of milk, bread and papers to complement our stock of bait, tackle, ice, gas, drinks, icecreams, smallgoods, groceries and video hire. Unfortunately supply of petrol and alcohol is still not available. August 30, 2001
